"Pieta by Michelangelo" Medallion
The “Pieta” medallion by Towle is a beautiful sterling medallion that depicts the masterful “Pieta” sculpture by famed Renaissance artist, Michelangelo. Commissioned for the French cardinal Jean de Billheres, “Pieta” was sculpted by Michelangelo in 1499, and depicts the body of Jesus being cradled by his mother Mary after his crucifixion. In 1964, The “Pieta” sculpture was moved from the Vatican for the first time in 465 years to be on display at the World’s Fair in New York, where this Towle “Pieta” medallion was sold as a memento.
